collage-2_for_web.jpg

Kenvale College organises activities that foster a spirit of service and raise social awareness of its students. Participants volunteer their time and raise necessary funds in some cases.

Service projects

service-project.jpgService projects are of 2-3 weeks duration to give the students the opportunity to work with people and cultures in the disadvantaged regions of the world. Countries visited in the past include Tonga, Fiji, Philippines, India and New Zealand.

Those unable to go overseas have participated in community service projects organised on Australia, such as Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart.

The result of the service projects has not only benefited the communities where they take place, but also helped the volunteer students to experience personal development and open their horizons to those in need.

Windgap

sharing.jpgWindgap is an organisation committed to improve the lifestyle and care of people with intellectual disability. Kenvale students assist Windgap in various ways.

One initiative was a dinner organised by the students for Windgap residents, teaching them how to cook, make invitations and decorate their homes for a theme party. Other students have run personal presentation seminars for young disabled people preparing to enter the workforce.

The work with Windgap has allowed Kenvale students to put their hospitality skills to use in their local communities.
Giving oneself to others could be a lot of fun!

Community visitors scheme

alyce-helping-lady.jpgCommunity visitors scheme (or CVS) is a great way of doing community service! Each student is paired with an elderly person in a nursing home or a sick patient in a hospital. The student visits the person on a regular basis throughout the year.

As well as providing company to someone who is quite isolated, it is also a fantastic opportunity for students to develop skills in communicating with people of different ages and who may have disabilities such as hearing impairment - valuable skills for working in hospitality.
