Not far from
the city centre is Randwick where Kenvale College of Tourism and
Hospitality Management is located. It is a residential suburb of
single-family homes and multi-unit blocks. The area accommodates
many students and has a large multi-cultural population. Its
shopping centres reflect the influence of many cultures.
At its closest point,
the City is about 4.5 kilometres southeast of the Sydney Central
Business District. At the northern extremity of the City is
Centennial Park, site of the Declaration of Federation on 1st
January, 1901, while the southern boundary forms part of the
foreshore of Botany Bay.
Predominantly a
residential area with related retail / commercial pockets, Randwick
is also a major educational centre with the University of New South
Wales and the Sydney Institute of Technology, Randwick Campus. The
National Institute of Dramatic Arts, training ground for many of
Australia’s leading actors, is housed on the University of New
South Wales’ campus. Kenvale College is located slightly opposite
Gate 9 of the University of New South Wales in High
Street.
Sport and recreation
have always been a major interest in the City and a full range of
sporting facilities are provided throughout the area. Horse racing
has had particular association with the region, with the first
registered horse race taking place on the site of the Royal
Randwick Racecourse in 1833. It is now Sydney’s premier racecourse.
Five quality golf links are within Randwick’s boundaries, the NSW,
St Michaels, Randwick, The Coast and The Australian. Also, adjacent
to Coogee Beach is Coogee Oval, home of the “Galloping Greens”,
Sydney’s premier Rugby Union Teams, whilst during the summer months
the Oval becomes the major venue for Randwick Cricket
Club.
